A key tip is that Osmanbey metro station (M2 line) should be used to its full potential. It is only one stop north to Sisli (for Cevahir Mall) and one stop south to Taksim square. From Taksim, either take the funicular to Kabataş in order to catch a ferry, or stay on the M2 line in order to reach the Old City (Sultanahmet) by getting off at the Vezneciler station. This way is much faster and inexpensive than a taxi in Istanbul's traffic.

For a good local vibe, spend one evening in the posh Nisantasi area rather than just the tourist hub of Taksim. This is where locals come to mingle. The atmosphere is great, with dozens of excellent restaurants and cool bars and designer shops giving a more refined look at new Istanbul life.

The Military Museum is right across the street from the hotel. Every day in the afternoon,(3:00 PM most of the days, check the time) there performs inside its halls one powerful and unique cultural experience that literally takes place on your doorstep: "Mehter" (Ottoman Military Band). When booking, request a room on a higher floor with a balcony. Some of these rooms give superb views over the city and, in the distance, a slight view of the Bosphorus as well, making a beautiful background to your stay.
